Volumental uses 3D scanning to tailor your personality

You may not have heard of Volumeal, but you will soon hear a lot about the technology of theirs. The startup from Stockholm, Sweden, uses 3D scanning and Intel's RealSense technology to help customers create clothing that fits their body perfectly. But so far the technology can only be used on people's feet to help retailers find the most suitable shoes for their customers. But the company believes that their technology can be extended to all of our apparel in the future, and even tailored to it. Their technology has already appeared in the European and Asian markets and will soon enter the United States.

Do you know the size of the shoes that best suits you? Most of the time, all you know is just a size. In fact, even within the same size range, each person's feet are different, which makes it very difficult for consumers to find the shoes that are most suitable for them. One of Volumental's goals is to make people forget the size of their shoes and use their technology to ensure that consumers get the perfect shoe experience every time.

The company's VANDRA hardware platform has four things that look like a ruler (see above), but in reality they are depth cameras. When the customer steps on the platform, the system completes the three-dimensional, volumetric scan of the foot in two seconds. The scan results are then sent to the software platform where the system captures multiple data points, including the length of the arch and the width of the foot. For shoe retailers, the traditional data is only difficult to obtain with traditional measurement tools. The data is then sent to the tablet in the salesperson's hand, and the salesperson then selects the most suitable pair of shoes for the customer based on the data.

The first Volumental foot scanners have appeared in some stores in Japan, where operators have developed a Volumental-based app that can recommend the right shoes to the size of the customer's foot. Swedish shoe brand Falchenberg and German company Scarosso are also using the technology to make completely tailor-made shoes for their customers. Just this week, Volumental also signed a cooperation agreement with Nordstrom to provide more accurate in-store shoe technology. The technology will also be used in a variety of footwear and apparel products by companies such as Boulanger, Brooks Brothers, Coop and Levi Strauss & Co.

While pushing its footwear technology platform to the US market, Volumental is aiming at the eyewear industry, which is working with eyewear brands to develop their second commercial application. Their latest facial 3D scanner captures detailed digital images of the customer's face, allowing technicians to find the frame that best matches the customer's head. Of course, this technology can also be used to create custom glasses for individuals. Volumental is currently working with German eyewear manufacturer Mykita, whose products are sold in more than eight countries.

“The first generation of VACKER solutions will enable the optician to scan the customer's face.” Volumental announced on its website, “In about a minute or so, the 3D scan results of the customer's face sub-millimeter accuracy will be displayed. On your tablet. By adjusting a parametric model to match the client's facial contours, the software proposes a perfectly matched frame, which then allows you to further adjust the frame with up to 12 different parameters while visualizing it in real time. Wearing effects... In addition to hardware, we also offer a cloud-based storage solution, VAULT, which can store relevant data securely, so your customers can reacquire them at any time in the future."
