Dutch artist Olivier van Herpt is also a 3D printing enthusiast, but he is not satisfied with the artistic features of traditional 3D printers and printed materials. “3D printing is a fun and exciting technology,” the sculptor said. “But the current desktop 3D printers can't make ordinary people's scales. For example, the bowls, dishes and decorations we use every day, Smaller sizes can't be manufactured. And desktop 3D printers print objects that are not heat-resistant and are not good enough for food safety. Industrial-grade 3D printers can meet these requirements, but they are too expensive."

To solve these problems, van Herpt spent two years creating a 3D printer that can print on clay. Unlike other clay 3D printers on the market that require specialized clay wires, van Herpt designed extruders can print on ordinary hard clay.

Since then, van Herpt, who graduated from the Eindhoven School of Design, has used his printer to create a series of eye-catching ceramic works and has experimented with innovative ways of creating art. For example, in a recent project, he collaborated with space sound designer Ricky van Broekvhen to create a work called Solid Vibrations.

Van Broekvhen is a musician with a degree in architecture and design. He likes to create shapes and shapes through sound and use it for his own visual art work. And van Herpt noticed that his 3D printer would leave a layer of texture on the surface of the object when printing clay. I felt that I could use these lines to make a certain art form. To this end, he found Van Broekvhen for help. The latter installed a speaker below the 3D printing platform. This speaker played various bass frequencies at different vibration frequencies during the printing process, causing the build platform to deposit dirt layer by layer on the print head. As the audio vibrates, a series of 3D objects with beautiful surface textures are finally created, visualizing the sound in a special form.

It is understood that these visual sounds come in various forms: some are like woven wicker; others are reminiscent of fish scales. The patterns are neat, uniform and beautiful, as if they were engraved with a certain machine, rather than a 3D printer being affected by sonic vibration. Looking at them, you can't help but imagine what it would be like to form these beautiful lines.

Currently, this project is still in progress. So far, the two artists have only used some relatively monotonous sounds. Their next step is to use some more personalized, richer sounds like speech or music. Imagine if you turned your favorite song into a certain pattern on a 3D printed ceramic object, would you give it a special feeling?
