How to make your own exclusive sports shoes with 3D printer

Friends who like sports know how important it is to have a pair of shoes that fits well. Shoes that don’t fit will wipe your feet off and even blisters. Therefore, they all hope to have a unique pair of shoes that are suitable for them, and the rapid development of 3D printing technology may soon make this idea a reality. Through digital design, we will be able to modify the size and shape of the shoes at will, and then print them in 3D with the right materials. But the 3D printing of shoes is not as easy as we thought.

Recently, members of Instructables, or design students, iwillspy13 personally designed and successfully produced a pair of sneakers in 3D. His experience may be able to guide us to successfully print out our shoes.

“The whole process took me a long time and a lot of energy,” iwillspy13 said. “But all the efforts are worth it. Create an item from scratch and use it in real life, which will bring You have a sense of accomplishment like never before."

The first step in the entire production process is to select the type of shoes you want to print. After that, in order to make the final plaster mold that is basically the same as the shape of the shoe, you need to make the original model of the shoe first. Things you need include:

a pair of shoes with similar design styles

Gypsum and all the materials necessary to make it

Woven bag

Smartphone with camera function

3D modeling software (3DS Max recommended)

a 3d printer

Need to be reminded that you need to take about 40 model images from the top, bottom and horizontal directions. Once completed, you can upload to the 3DS MAX software and start modeling. Iwillspy13 divided the design of the shoe into two parts. The design work was quite hard and difficult, but after working hard, he finally succeeded.

Many of the basic designs can be found in Autodesk's own tutorials, and designing one side will probably help you solve many problems. You can also download the files designed by iwillspy13 inspired by its favorite Adidas sneakers from Thingiverse and enter it into the software.

“Basically, just connect the points and lines into a grid and carefully modify them to get the shape you want,” says iwillspy13. “If you want to add the sole to the overall sneakers in the first place, it should be simple. ”

“I added a surface improver and moved the surrounding points to make the shape of the sneaker. You also need to edit the Bezier curve at some point to make the surface of the shape look smoother. What you have to do later is Fine-tune, add an editable polygon, manipulate it as needed and smooth the mesh."

Once you have checked the model and confirmed that it can be printed in 3D, you have completed the main part of the work. Iwillspy13 uses MakerBot software and a Replicator 2 printer, adding a lot of support during the printing process. So it is necessary to check the settings in advance.
