University of Ottawa ’s next-generation iPad classroom optimizes teaching experience

Over the past two years, the equipment used by students and the way they use them have changed dramatically. Previously, approximately 75% of users used laptops and 25% used desktop computers; now, we have found that approximately 50% of users use laptops and other users use mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. Gone are the days when students rushed into the library and computer room between classes. We once produced a list of "allowed access to the network" equipment. But those are history.

To this end, the University of Ottawa built a new generation of iPad classrooms to optimize the teaching experience. Verified by the Information Technology (IT) Department of the University of Ottawa, the classroom can provide 6 major multimedia educational applications to 100 iPads at the same time. Each application can be delivered to all 100 iPads with high quality without any obvious jitter, delay or frame loss. After testing by VeriWaveWaveInsite, all iPads passed the multimedia service level agreement (SLA). WaveInsite also objectively tested the continuous performance of each iPad transmitting 1Mbps multimedia traffic.

We placed 100 first- and second-generation iPads with or without 3G capabilities in a 250-seat classroom at the University of Ottawa to test the actual performance of multimedia application delivery (see Figure 1).

The access network uses one latest ArubaS3500 mobile access switch, four AP-135 and one mobile controller with M3 controller module. All network interfaces and access points use IPv6 to demonstrate how to build a future-oriented environment suitable for a large number of mobile devices. The entire network is managed by the ArubaAirWave system in order to fully control the network and view users and device types in detail.

The apps we tested are all the top-ranked apps in each category today, including:

1. Teaching management: BlackboardMobileLearn. The application allows all clients to access the course at the same time and watch the digital course content of the unicast streaming video on demand;

2. Video teaching course: DistributionAccessLearning. The application can enable all clients to simultaneously distribute video distribution when teaching video content;

3. Video conference: AppleFacetime. The application allows teachers to quickly and easily use a video conference to teach a classroom;

4. Dynamic speech: AppleAirPlay. The application wirelessly automatically streams multimedia content to AppleTV connected to the classroom projector;

5. IP TV: HaiVision's FurnaceIP video system. The distribution of local video content live broadcast by the system;

6. Electronic testing and evaluation: ResponseWare of Turning Technologies. The application conducts teaching evaluation through all clients responding to real-time questions.

Our deployment and the test results obtained in the actual environment will provide an important reference for the deployment of delay-sensitive mobile applications such as iPad HD video in high-density customer environments. With 100 iPad settings as a benchmark, a variety of similar users can confidently bring multimedia-level Wi-Fi experience to hundreds of users in a high-density client environment.
