Research finds vegetatives can communicate with people through brain scans

Scott Rutley from Ontario, Canada

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) technology displays brain activity in real time by tracking the flow of oxygen-rich blood. A 2010 study by Professor Irwin said that nearly one-fifth of vegetative patients can communicate through brain activity

Professor Adrian Owen uses brain scanning technology to discover patients ’hidden consciousness and enable them to communicate

On November 15th, Beijing time, a Canadian who was in a vegetative state for more than ten years told scientists that he had no pain. This is the first time a patient with severe brain damage and loss of communication ability can answer the clinical treatment effect.

The doctor used a functional MRI device to scan the brain of 39-year-old Scott Routley and asked him questions. His doctor said the discovery meant that medical textbooks needed to be rewritten. The vegetative refers to the state in which the patient has awakened intermittently and has opened his eyes, but is unable to perceive himself or the outside world.

Mr. Rutley suffered severe brain damage in a car accident 12 years ago. Since then, no assessment of his physical condition has revealed signs of consciousness or the ability to communicate with others. However, Professor Adrian Owen, a British neurobiologist, believes that Mr. Rutley obviously cannot be classified as a vegetative.

Professor Owen led a team at the Institute of Brain and Thinking at the University of Western Ontario, Canada. He said: "Scott has been able to show consciousness and thinking ability. We have conducted several scan tests on him, and his brain activity shows him He is clearly choosing to answer our questions. We believe that he knows who he is and where he is. "Professor Irving thinks this is a groundbreaking moment. He said," Our goal for many years is to be able to ask the patient some right They are very important issues. In the future, we will also ask them how to improve the quality of life, such as what kind of entertainment can be provided to them, or hope to take a few baths a day to eat several times, etc. "

Scott Rutley's family has always believed that he was conscious and could communicate with people by raising his thumbs or rolling his eyes, but these were not accepted by medical personnel. Professor Bryan Young of the University of London Hospital has been Mr. Rutley's neurologist for ten years. He believes that the scan results have subverted Mr. Rutley's behavioral assessment over the years.

Professor Brian Yang said: "I am very surprised that he was able to make these cognitive responses. His clinical manifestation is a typical vegetative and did not show meaningful spontaneous movements." Observation and evaluation still showed that he was in a vegetative state. Professor Yang said that Professor Owen's technology should be written in medical textbooks.

For more than a year, the BBC's panoramic program has tracked several patients in the UK and Canada who are in a vegetative state and have weak awareness. Another Canadian patient, Steven Graham, can prove that he can already produce new memories after brain damage. When asked if his sister had a daughter, Mr. Graham replied yes, and his niece was born five years after his car accident.

The Panoramic Column team also tracked three patients at the Royal Neurological Disorder Hospital. This hospital is very good at the rehabilitation of patients with brain injury. They also collaborated with scientists from the University of Cambridge neurology team conducting research at the Ardenbrook Hospital. One of the three patients was diagnosed as a vegetative, and he failed to show consciousness in a functional magnetic resonance imaging device. Another patient was unable to be fully diagnosed due to repeated illnesses, and afterwards he showed limited conscious activity in brain scans.
