How to Change the Bottle of Whiskey

When you want to drink a good whisky, there are several questions you need to answer. Do you add ice? Scotch or Irish whisky? Add a little water? Wine connoisseurs know that each person's whiskey is almost the same way.

Another problem is whether to store your expensive bottle of whisky in the original bottle or choose a bottle change: pour the wine into a crystal bottle and throw the bottle into the recycling bin. The Scottish winemaker Macallan hopes that true whiskey lovers will appreciate the tasteful bottle changing method.

In November 2010, the McAllen Winery will launch an auction of limited-edition 64-year-old whisky in the world, which is the oldest collection in the country. The whisky will be sealed and stored in a specially designed bottle changing device by Lalique, a well-known French crystal product company. The crystal bottle uses a traditional and very rare “Care perdue” model. Refined by craftsmanship, the bottom is flat and elliptical, just like the bottle changer used on sea ships in the 1920s. This design highlights the history of McAllen's heritage in northeastern Scotland.

The crystal bottle and the 64-year Scotch whisky aging will begin with a global tour of places such as Los Angeles, Seoul, Osaka, Taipei, Shanghai and Hong Kong before being publicly auctioned at Sotheby's. During the tour, the McAllen Winery will also auction the bottle of 64-year-old mini-packs and have already made a deal in Paris, London and Moscow for between $6,000 and $9,000. All proceeds raised from these auctions (including those from Laiwu Crystal Wine Bottles) will be donated to charity: water, also known as Big Love Water, which aims to improve the drinking of developing countries. Does whiskey change bottles?

Greer: Whisky naturally matures in wooden barrels. 50% of its flavor is derived from the barrels of Chen Hui's whisky, and the other half comes from the way of manufacture. In general, we will change the whiskey into a wine bottle for preservation.

Will changing the bottle to whiskey affect its taste?

Greer: The quality of whiskey does not change. Due to the high concentration of alcohol, whisky is very stable. You know, the lowest alcohol concentration of Scotch whiskey is 40 degrees, while the wine is generally between 12 degrees and 13 degrees. The higher the alcohol concentration, the less likely the wine will deteriorate.
