Recycled paper and printing quality

The U.S. Federal Government has a provision for recycled paper. In 1995, they set the standard at 25% recycled fiber, which was increased to 30% in 1999. A research unit in the United States found that when the circulating fiber in the paper increases, the strength of the paper will continue to decline, but when the recycled fiber content exceeds 40%, the strength of the paper will increase. The concept of most people think that the fiber structure will be damaged during the circulation process. The loss of water-soluble hemicellulose and the original strength agent will weaken the overall paper strength. Later, some people refuted this claim after research, and found that even after the paper has gone through six cycles, the fiber length change is only very small, which shows that there are other factors that cause this phenomenon.

The research report of Stone and Scallan clearly pointed out that during the drying process, the surface area of the pulp will shrink, reducing part of the binding ability, which often occurs on chemical pulp. Conversely, during the circulation process, the lignin in the mechanical pulp will be gelatinized, which will increase the binding capacity and elasticity, and the overall paper strength will increase. Nowadays, many manufacturers of recycled paper are constantly improving in the production process, in order to make the characteristics of recycled paper and wood fiber as close as possible. For example, adding additives to chemical pulp or using chemical treatment steps to increase paper strength. But because the ink and dirt in the paper are not completely removed, the brightness will decrease with the increase of recycled fibers. In view of this, manufacturers will add some filler pigments or use different bleaching steps to increase the brightness. The characteristics of recycled fiber are not bad at all, it can increase the opacity of paper, reduce the reflection, and improve the quality of printed products.

From the physical properties of paper, surface strength, water resistance and smoothness are all important factors. In addition, in terms of optical properties, opacity, lightness, and paper color are all items to be noted. Note that the recycled fibers in the paper will change the brightness of the paper, and then reduce the expressive color gamut, but it will not affect the clarity of the print. The use of recycled paper has become more and more common, and various manufacturers are constantly researching in terms of color gamut, print clarity, quality, etc., in order to obtain better paper characteristics.
